An IT employee never loses his job or work, he may only lose the Brand behind it
No one can remove an individual from work, they can only remove he/she from a company.
Loss of jobs is expected and most-heard during a crisis followed by a recession. There will be many estimates and statistics projected by economists but there are two things a Government does always to tackle it on the go.
- It provides financial aid to the laid-off employees
- It asks companies to hoard the staff until they permit firing the jobholders.
To talk about how media projects the statistics and how this news shatters hopes of millions here’s a sample
The famous theory is ‘During a crisis, there will be job cuts, people will be unemployed, production comes down and it increases the prevailing recession- so it’s hard to break the cycle.
My theory is the opposite: I’ just talking about IT industry- shall talk about rest in the next ones.
‘If an employee is laid off, he/she is losing mainly the brand more than the work, the tagline they carried on the ID cards. So after a worker of technology is free in the market, he/she is free to do more innovative projects, is ready to be a revolutionary employer or creates his/her own projects and engages all other free and skilled engineers.
This produces wide alternative solutions to problems ignored, solved from routine perspectives, or problems not discovered at all’. Because the economy is not a tea stall to make tea, sell, and make profits the same day. The economy is always futuristic and recession is the future-builder, proved multiple times in history. Google, Apple, and WhatsApp were all funded during the recession times.
There are 3 important things to keep in mind if an employee is willing to take charge of the situation as a leader at his/her own level
- For a guy who can play with technology or knows nuts and bolts of it, livelihood in a crisis not about paying EMIs and debts, it’s about survival and it’s not wiped away by anyone as media dramatizes. It’s the loss of Brand value and the tagline. Suppose you are fired from Google, IBM, or TCS; they removed you from their company, they can’t stop you from working- the actual work you can do on your own.
- During a crisis, a lot of cynicism and panic spreads in the office and team. The best thing to do is to be jovial with colleagues and subordinates because even if it may not solve the problem, it subverts it. At that time a congenial employee wins hearts than the most serious competitive employee. Anywhere in the world, people need individuals who can make them laugh and take things easy during crises which add to the strength to fight.
- For an individual who worked in the job market for a while, it’s not great to ask his/her juniors and younger pals who are in final phases of studies or job search about ‘what they are doing’. It would be great if they can give solid guidance on ‘what to do and how to do’ in the free times of recession and job loss. If the younger ones always get pressure but no empathetic guidance, what’s the use of elders working in big companies for years? One can start with guiding them on their final year projects and help them do real-time ones under their supervision (not domination)
In the IT industry, all one wants is a laptop with an internet connection. One can do the work anywhere from the world and is proved in lockdown. It’s not possible for employees of other fields like manufacturing and production. They can’t build refrigerators from home.
If someone wants to work, there’s a ton of work than before during a crisis, especially in a developing country like India.
