Balanced diet is a great myth…
Let food be thy medicine
Otherwise, medicine will be thy food…
– Hippocrates
How wisely said! If only we understood the message, health would not be an issue.
Food is the greatest medicine. It is common sense, but common sense is not very common. How it is not common, let’s see.
People have many bad habits regarding their diet. They don’t take a balanced diet. They don’t follow any rules or timetable. They eat whatever is tasty. Tasty food is not often healthy.
They don’t have any idea of a good diet.
What is a good diet? It is a balanced diet. This balanced diet is again a myth. It contains a long list of items.
But I put forth a new diet regime. Think about it. Our body needs carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals, vitamins. The recent addition is fibre. But you may know that proteins can yield energy like carbohydrates and proteins can convert to fats. So what remains is vitamins and fibre.
Fresh vegetables give you both fibre and minerals. Now what remains is vitamins. Local or seasonal fruits give you vitamins.
So what we can infer is our body needs proteins, vegetables and fruits besides our staple food rice or wheat with pulses or non-vegetarian food.
Let’s make it simple. You need proteins and vegetarian fibre with rice or roti. What vegetables can give us an abundant supply of these things, we can discuss in detail in the next article.
